TYPES OF ALARMS
Alarm systems are intended to detect a burglary and will not necessarily prevent one. Losses and damages can be reduced due to quick response by either the police or a security company.
Alarm systems should never replace good physical security. Items such
as dead bolt locks, good lighting, secure windows and strong exterior
doors are the mainstay to a good defense against
intruders.
Selecting an Alarm Company
In selecting an alarm
company, ask for recommendations from friends with alarm systems, or
your insurance agent. Find out how long a company has been in
business, the type of service facilities with local offices. Alarm
companies should possess adequate insurance of all types and its
employees should be bonded. A written contract should be supplied and
include equipment and service warranties. Any contracts should also
contain a warranty to ensure that the equipment retains a high level
of operation.
It is wise to obtain detailed quotes and security information from several qualified alarm companies before making any selection. For further information, contact The Better Business Bureau

Doors:
Magnetic contact switches are affixed to the door and frame. When the
door is opened, the magnetic field is broken, causing a signal to be
sent to the control panel. If this is a new construction, pressure
release switches may be installed within the door
frame.
Windows:
Windows that open may be protected with magnetic contacts, which
operate similarly to the door switches. If this is a new
construction, pressure release switches may be installed within the
window frame.
The Interior:
Motion detectors are devices which detect movement in the protected
area. These devices are commonly referred to
as "infrareds",
"lasers", "ultrasonics", "photocells", etc. The area to be protected and the
environment of the protected area will determine which type of
detector should be used. As an example you wouldn't want an
ultrasonic detector in a dwelling with pets roaming about.
The Control Panel:
The keypad is located near the commonly used entry door. It allows
you to turn the alarm system on and off. A second panel is sometimes
included and setup in the master bedroom The keypad is a remote
device usually connected to a main control panel, commonly located in
the basement. The main control will house the rechargeable battery
and controls the operation of the entire system.
