Scouts Programs

Drake Planetarium's hands-on science center has prepared special programs for Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts, as well as children in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Our instructors will lead your troop through activities which are required for earning badges related to the field of astronomy. These activities include learning to use a star map, finding constellations in the night sky during different seasons, identification of directions, a discussion of apparent motion of the sun and stars, moon phases, and other earth/space related concepts.

Program Dates: Third Monday and Tuesday evenings of the month. (Except Holiday weeks)

Program Times: 4:00 - 6:00 pm (Lego Lab), 6:00-700 pm (Planetarium)

Program Cost: $6/hr - Lego; $5/hr - Planetarium

Special Winter Session: This is an astronomy program designed for grades 2-3 and 4-6. Scouts build models and scientific instruments while learning astronomy through hands-on lab experiences. Same days and times as listed above.

LEGO Lab Technology Bridge

Bring your scouts to our Lego Lab where they can work toward science and engineering badges. Call for prices and reservations.

Scout Wind Car Program

Scouts will construct a wind car demonstrating Newton's first law of motion. Teams will design, race, then rebuild wind cars and clock the speed of their team car to discover design elements that effect speed. There is a contest at the end of the activity. Boy Scout Engineering Badge requirements 1, 6a, and 6d.

Webelos Engineering Pin

Cub Scouts will build catapults, cranes, and bridges in teams of two. Contests are held to test the best design projects. This program can be 1.5 or 2 hours. Leaders and scouts both will have a blast on this field trip!

All Scout Lego Programs are held at Drake Science Center at 4557 Montgomery Road, corner of Montgomery & Sherman Ave. in the Fidelity Professional Building

All Scout Planetarium Shows are held at Drake Planetarium, 2020 Sherman Avenue on the top floor of Norwood High School.
