Drake Planetarium Public Programs

We offer a monthly program for the general public. These programs have a specific theme for the evening as well as a period for investigating the seasonal constellations and planets.

'Tis The Season

'Tis The Season explores the diversity of festivities and customs of the season under the stars. Learn the history behind Santa Claus and the Christmas tree, the Hanukkah Menorah, as well as Norse customs, like the Yule log and mistletoe.
Bring the entire family, including all the visiting relatives, for this educational season show. Program narrated by NPR's Noah Adams. Produced by Loch Ness Productions.

Drake Planetarium is open for the public one evening a month, offering fascinating glimpses into the wonderful world of astronomy and space science. Each monthly program is divided into two parts:

The first section covers a particular topic of interest, for example, the Mars Lander, asteroids and near Earth collisions, the International Space Station, and the like.

The second part is always an introduction into the nighttime sky. Each person is given a free sky chart.
After learning how to use it, they are then taught to recognize the major constellations and planets visible at that season of the year
