July 10, 2008

Kentucky Lake: Water Level at Ky Dam - 358.56 Surface Temperature - 83
Lake Barkley: Water Level at Barkley Dam - 358.80 Surface Temperature - 82

Both lakes are slightly under summer pool. Both lakes are scheduled to be drawn down over the month of July to one foot below summer pool. With the exception of today, which was somewhat slower than has been this week, the Largemouth Bass bite has continued to be very good on the ledges. Today we were on the backside of a front that passed thru the area last night and had flat water, no current and high pressure. Even with these negative factors, my clients managed to catch more than a limit of bass. The White Bass continue to very active...I personally witnessed no less than 5 White Bass jumps today while fishing for Largemouth on the main lake. The weather forecast for the weekend looks pretty good with highs in the low 90's and a slight chance of thunderstorms each day.

Largemouth Bass: Largemouth are being taken on the main lake river and creek channel ledges and on the creek channel ledges in the mouths of the deeper bays. These fish are being taken on Carolina rigged creature baits and Carolina and Texas rigged worms, deep diving crankbaits, slack lining casting jigs and dragging football head jigs. Largemouth are also being taken near the grass beds early and late in the day on topwater lures, spinnerbaits and soft jerkbaits. Some Largemouth are also being taken during the day near wood cover with Texas rigged creature baits and worms as they are feeding on schools of fry.

Smallmouth Bass: Smallmouth are being taken on the river and creek channel ledges during the day but not in large numbers. These fish are taking Carolina rigged creature baits and Texas rigged worms. The daytime Smallmouth bite is poor even though we are catching a few of these fish. Smallmouth generally feed at night during the summer months but I have not received any reports of good catches as of yet at night.

Some of the productive lures this week are: Zoom horney toads in green pumpkin pearl, Chatterbuzz buzzbaits in white, Zoom super flukes in white, Rapala DT 16 in parrot and black/silver, Norman DD22 in white and canary, Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in blue glimmer, Charmer timber pups in green pumpkin, watermelon/purple and purple passion, Charmer 10.5 inch worm in plum and electric blue, Jewel football head jigs in Missouri Craw and D&L casting jigs in black/blue.

White Bass: White Bass are being taken along the old river channel and creek channel ledges on the main lake by vertically fishing with inline spinners. White Bass are also being taken in the jumps (surface feeding) by casting inline spinners and small crankbaits into the feeding schools.

Catfish: Channel Catfish are being taken along the old river channels on bottom rigs baited with shrimp, leeches and nightcrawlers. Blue Catfish are also being taken along the old river channels on bottom rigs baited with cut baits and yellowtail.

Bluegill: Bluegill are being taken around Mayfly hatches early and late in the day on worms and crickets fished under bobbers. Bluegill are also being taken around lighted docks at night on worms fished under bobbers.

We would like to welcome the FLW Stren Series back to Kentucky Lake on July 23-26. This is the second appearance for this trail here on Kentucky Lake this season. For those folks coming here to participate or observe the tournament, don't forget to stop by Fisherman's Headquarters on U.S. 68 in Draffenville and The Cabin Bait and Tackle on U.S. 62 in Kuttawa for all your tackle needs. The folks at these two stores will have the latest in bass fishing information as well as the best selections of lures in the area. If you have a problem with your boat while you are here for the tournament or need some boating accessories don't hesitate to see the folks at Jet-A-Marina located on U.S. 62 in Calvert City. You will find the staff there is committed to serving your needs in a professional manner.

If you are in need of a bass guide for some fun bass fishing, tournament preparation, lake familiarization or technique instruction don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me a line. I have the following dates available in July, August and September:

July: 23, 27, 29, 30, 31
August and September: Still plenty of dates available so just give me call or drop me an email.

If you have not made your fall reservations for tournaments or just some fun bass fishing you need to do so soon...or you may not get the dates you want.

Whitebass fishing is good. The whites are feeding along the flats just off the river channel. Mepps spinners fished close to the bottom are working well. Some white are also in the jumps and catches have been very good. Largemouth are still hitting Carolina rigged plastics on the main lake drop offs. The largemouth bite is good when and where ever current can be found. May flies are hatching and every thing is feeding on the bugs near the surface. Catfishing is excellent at night under the bug hatches. Bluegill are active under trees with the May Fly hatches overhead. Catfish and stripes are also good in the tail waters. The water temps are in the lower 80's and fishing has been very good. It's a good time to get on the water and catch a few.

Report Updated April 7, 2008

Crappie fishing for the month of March has been a tough one. I am also sorry to say that part of the reason it has been tough is water levels. On 4/06/08 at 7:00a.m. the lake level is 365.3 and rising. Threading the needle or doodling is possibly the best method to catch'em. Casting banks has had poor results, I think because there is so much cover available to the crappie they are just very scattered. We have caught some good crappie 14 to 17 foot deep, but, I just do not think that is where the majority of the fish are.
Bass fishing however has been excellent. There has been a lot of good fishing in and around the bushes. Pitchin and flippen is an excellent and fun way to fish, that catches some good fish. There is nothing like setting the hook on a 5 pounder in a bush and hauling her out of there 10 foot away on 30 pound test line.
Rattletraps in the creek channels was working very well on Kentucky but that pattern has faded out at least in my boat. I have however heard some excellent results on Barkley, rattletrapping creekmouths.
Good luck and be careful on the water, there is a lot of drift, Dan Dolack, Capt Dan Guide Service

Report Updated June 19, 2008

Air Temp: Low 63° /High 85°
Water Temp: Low 80° /High 84°
Water Elevation: 359.2 (359 is Summer Pool)
Water Clarity: Clear but stained (4’ to 5’ visibility)
Water Current: Very little

The past few weeks I’ve been busy fishing deep ledges on the main lake. We’ve caught many 3LB Largemouths and a few as big as 6LBs. We’ve also been catching a fair number of big White Bass, an occasional big Striper (6-8LBs), and a few large Sauger. When it’s hot and there’s a good chance of some river current, there’s no place I’d rather be than out in the middle of the lake looking for a big school of hungry fish. However, for the past week the weather has been fairly mild and I’ve found myself venturing back into the bays and I’ve found faster action but smaller fish there. This year’s hatch of fish (fry) have gotten a little size to them now and there is a lot of surface feeding by Bass, Whites, Skip Jack, and even Bluegill and Red Ears. To find good action right now, tie on a 1/8 to ¼ oz inline spinner and go for a boat ride early in the morning looking for surface busting fish. The fish are usually on shallow gravel bars, shady main lake banks, or grassy flats, but may be out in open water. When you see these busting fish ease your boat near enough to cast past them and real your spinner thru them and you’ll catch Largemouth, Smallmouth, Whites, Yellows, Bluegill, and who knows what else. Good, Easy, fun fishing!

BLACK BASS:
Most of the larger fish are on the main lake now but there are still good sized fish shallow. Docks, stake beds, grassy flats, shoreline brush and grass, shady banks, ledges, and gravel bars are all producing fish. Horny toads, Sammys, and buzz baits will catch fish on top right now especially in the morning and evening. Black and blue spinner baits fished on main lake points at night will give good action, and is probably your best shot at a big Smallie right now. Inline spinners cast at busting fish will give you plenty of action in the morning and just before dark. Big worms, Carolina rigs, jigs, big spoons, deep cranks, and swim baits fished on ledges will probably get you bigger fish but you may have to endure more slow action between spurts of activity. These cooler nights and days do increase shallow water activity, but remember: Cooler water sinks and warmer water rises. Therefore, the deep water is still the coolest water to be found right now and that’s where most of the big fish are. I’ve caught some good sized bass as deep as 38’. That’s deep for this lake!

WHITE BASS:
Action has been sporadic. Good when there is current or when you find surface busting fish. Biggest fish coming 25’ to 30’ deep on main river channel. Smaller Whites have been chasing fry on surface. Inline spinners and spoons will catch them.

BLUEGILL/ RED EAR:
I’ve caught a few good messes this past week real shallow (2’ to 4’). Small spider jigs, beetle spins, wax worms, or crickets are all effective. The action is not as good as May was but remarkably good for June.

CRAPPIE:
Fish white curly tails or minnows over main lake brush in 12’ to 18’ water. I’ve heard some are still being caught much shallower.

CATFISH:
Channel Cats are still spawning and can be caught from 4’ to 25’ deep on night crawlers, shrimp, leeches, or chicken liver.

Blues are deeper, 20’ to 40’ deep on creek and river channel. Fish large shiners, leeches, shrimp, or cut bait for some brutes.

SAUGER:
Trolling medium running crank baits or fishing a large minnow 12’ to 25’ deep will get you some good sized Sauger (14” to 18”).
