Training and Formation for Adult Youth Workers

Why Training?

Youth Ministry is much more than youth group, dances and service projects. It involves facilitating a comprehensive, parish– or school-wide effort that integrates young people into the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community as disciples of Jesus Christ. It involves faith formation; volunteer recruitment, training and management; leadership development for youth and adults; paraprofessional counseling; expertise in prayer and worship, and much more. Our youth deserve our very best. Training leads directly to quality and effectiveness in youth ministry.

For Whom?

Adults  who serve Catholic youth in a significant way should receive training for their roles, specifically:

·         Directors and Coordinators of Youth Ministry

·         Volunteer, Paid or Stipended Youth Ministry Leaders and Staff

·         DRE’s and CRE’s

·         Pastoral Ministers or Associates

·         Scout Leaders

·         High School Campus Ministers and Chaplains

·         Catechists

What Kinds of Training Are Available?

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OYYAM) offers three levels of training which correspond to the levels and kinds of roles that leaders play in youth ministry. Basic Training is designed to provide fundamentals for those new to the ministry, or those who haven’t received training. Intermediate Training picks up where basic training leaves off and provides knowledge, skills and practical wisdom for those who want to grow more effective in their youth ministry as volunteers or part-timers. The Training Program for Professional Youth Ministry Leaders is designed for those who fill, or will be filling, part-time or full-time roles directing or coordinating youth ministry in a parish or school. This could be on-site training that helps address the needs of your particular youth ministry program, or individual training that leads to the Professional Certificate in Youth Ministry, Youth Ministry Certification, or the Advanced Certificate in Youth Ministry.
