A course for youth ministry professionals

Training Program

The Foundations of Leadership Course is the heart of the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry’s new training program, the Certificate Program for Professional Youth  Ministry Leaders.

The course is designed for those who bear  responsibility for directing/coordinating a faith community’s comprehensive youth ministry as part-time or full-time professional, staff-level youth ministers. This comprehensive 15-session course is offered in collaboration with the University of Dayton. It will take place annually in the Fall semester. Those participants who are not interested in university credit may still take the course as a no-credit option.

All are welcome to take the course: youth ministers, and those who want to become youth ministers; catechetical leaders and pastoral ministers responsible for coordinating youth ministry; and participants in the Certificate Program for Professional Youth Ministry Leaders

Some features of the course:

  • Scheduled during the day to avoid conflicts with evening and weekend programming

  • Receive graduate or undergraduate credit through the University of Dayton.

  • Meet weekly with other youth ministry leaders and share your own success stories in youth ministry

What you will learn:

  • The needs of Millennial youth, dramatically and uniquely different from their Gen X and Baby Boomer predecessors

  • Effective strategies for implementing the goals, components and themes of comprehensive youth ministry as identified by the U.S. bishops

  • How to develop and manage a dynamic, long-range curriculum for adolescent catechesis that is integrated into the life of the faith community

  • How to set up a crisis response plan for your faith community

  • A comprehensive strategy for integrating prayer and worship into all levels of youth ministry

  • The three fundamental, vital and non-negotiable tasks of staff-level youth ministry leaders

  • What the experts tell us about the stages of adolescent faith development and moral development

  • Strategies for effectively organizing, recruiting and managing volunteer leaders

        And much, much more..
