Specialized Training for Youth Ministry Professionals

Journeying with young people in faith calls for broad competence. The workshops listed below are required for the Professional Certificate (all but the first two may also be used to satisfy requirements for the Intermediate Volunteer Certificate).  They are designed to meet the range of competencies identified in the National Certification Standards for Lay Ecclesial Ministers Serving as Youth Ministry Leaders.

Location:  Workshops and seminars will be located in the various regions of the Archdiocese in order to accommodate participants.

New! On-Site Workshops & Seminars:  Although these workshops are regularly scheduled throughout the archdiocese, you may also request that they be brought to your parish at a time convenient for you! If you have at least five participants who desire specific training, contact the OYYAM and we’ll work to arrange training on-site in your parish. All we ask is that the training be open to any others in the Archdiocese who may want to participate as well. (Also see our Take-out Menu for other available workshops.)

·         Legal & Liability Concerns in Youth Ministry (2˝ hrs.):  This seminar will address the critical legal and liability issues facing youth ministry leaders, including: Child Protection Decree, medical and permission/release forms, transportation, alcohol and tobacco use, copyright laws, supervision, and more. (This is also a Basic Level I Certificate Requirement)

·         Live the Word—Engaging Youth in Service (2˝ hrs.): Today’s young people have been called the most service-oriented generation in decades. This workshop will cover all the basics of planning a service project—getting youth excited about service, how to choose an appropriate project, permission forms and other legal and liability issues, and debriefing the experience. (This is also a Basic Level II Certificate Requirement)

Introduction to Catechetical Ministry With Adolescents (Formerly Leading Teens to God)(10 hrs.):  This four part mini-series will equip youth ministry leaders with the skills necessary to develop and implement effective faith formation sessions that grow young disciples. This course is a requirement for both the Intermediate and Professional Certificates.  It addresses core competencies for Youth Ministry Certification and the Office of Evangelization & Catechesis Certification.

Session 1: The Vocation and Ministry of the Catechist: This session deals with role of the catechist and its relationship to the mission of the Church. It will deal with the purpose of catechesis, the vocational call to ministry with youth, the qualities and characteristics of a catechist as presented in the General Directory for Catechesis and the National Directory for Catechesis,  and the personal and interpersonal dimensions of evangelization and adolescent faith formation: what does conversion look like in a young person? What are the normal stages of faith development and how can we support them?

Session 2: Catechetical Process: How to Design Effective Catechetical Sessions.  Interesting and effective learning sessions are critical for success with adolescent faith formation. What are the steps of good catechetical process? Why should it be used with lesson plans? How does one write appropriate goals, learning objectives and aims around a religious topic? What is the relationship between evangelization and catechesis? How does one incorporate hands-on activities  and other techniques to make lessons fun while maximizing understanding and retention? These and other issues will be discussed.

Session 3: The Creative Catechist: This session builds on what was learned in Catechetical Process by addressing more specifically the age range of Junior and Senior High youth. This session helps participants understand this stage of faith development, and how this stage impacts effective learning experiences. It discusses the utilization of resources, activities, techniques and ideas to create age-appropriate and effective learning experiences. It also introduces the document Growing Together: Ministry to Adolescents.

Session 4: Catholic Identity: Helping Teens Become Catholic to the Core.  What is foundational and unique to Catholicism? How does one form students and families in Catholic practices, beliefs and way of life? This session discusses the necessity of addressing Catholic identity in our contemporary culture, explains the incarnational principle and how to explore its implications in non-school settings, presents the Catholic perspective on the relationship between faith and reason so that catechists may show students how to apply it to even secular issues.  This sessions also discusses ways to involve parents and families in faith formation so as to encourage entire families to be active participants in their faith communities.

·         Youth Ministry Dynamics:  Small Group Facilitation Skills (2˝  hrs.):  One of the most effective ways to help young people grow in and explore their faith is through small group interaction. This workshop will provide the necessary skills to facilitate a small group in a safe and healthy way.

·         Youth Ministry Dynamics:  Large Group Facilitation (2˝ hrs.):  It’s both a skill and an art to lead groups of young people in large group (15-50 or more persons) activities like icebreakers, simulation games, experiential learning exercises, retreats, etc. This session will equip youth ministry leaders with the tools to effectively lead activities with large groups of young people.

·         Youth Ministry Crisis Intervention (2˝ hrs.):  Every adult youth worker needs to be prepared to help hurting young people by listening well, knowing what to say (and not to say) and getting them the help they need. This session will develop the attitude, art and skill of active/redemptive listening; explore how to intervene effectively and appropriately in a crisis; and equip youth ministry leaders with the ability to understand the limits of their role and capabilities, and to make good referrals.

·         Preach the Gospel at All Times:  Catholic Youth Evangelization (5 hrs):  It’s not that youth don’t want the Good News – it’s just not always being proclaimed in a language they can understand! This seminar will detail the basic elements of comprehensive Catholic evangelization, identify practical approaches and methods, and provide basic skills for outreach that nurture in teen disciples a living, “owned” faith.

·         Developing Effective Youth Retreats (5 hrs.):  This seminar will explore foundational principles for retreat design and development; equip youth ministry leaders with a practical step-by-step master plan for youth retreat development; and provide the concepts and resources necessary to develop effective retreats for younger and older adolescents.

·         Youth In Conversation With God (5 hrs.):  Effective praying awakens and nurtures in young people a deeper life of grace and prepares them for full incorporation into the sacramental life of the faith community. Offered as a five- seminar or an overnight retreat, this course will provide tools, knowledge and skills necessary to lead prayer and engage youth in creative and varied forms of personal prayer and corporate worship including guided meditation, praying with scripture, ritual prayer, etc.

·         Adolescents & Suicide (2˝  hrs):  The adolescent years can be difficult to navigate. The mounting anxiety and stress created by changing bodies, self-esteem, relationships and identity issues can create an at-risk environment for teens. The causes, clues and effective responses to teen suicide will be explored in this seminar.

·         Celebrate Diversity:  Building a Multicultural Youth Ministry (2˝ hrs.):  To be effective, youth ministry leaders need to understand the cultures already present in their parishes, how they interact with each other and what prayer styles speak to their hearts.
