Planners and leaders of trips to World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia in July, 2008 are alerted to the following: Eighteen is the legal drinking age in Australia. There is no policy by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati that prohibits participants eighteen and over from consuming alcoholic beverages while in Australia. Trip leaders may use their own discretion in establishing more stringent guidelines (e.g., prohibiting the use of any alcoholic beverages by all participants), if such would assist the supervision and safety of their trips. It it, of course, official policy that participants under the age of eighteen are prohibited from consuming alcoholic beverages, regardless of its legality in the country they are traveling, in keeping with the Archdiocesan Decree on Child Protection which identifies anyone under the age of eighteen as a child.
